What didn't make it into the Student Exhibition?

I was walking around the Broad St. School of the Arts Building and took a look at the sculpture submissions for the VCU Student Exhibition. The pictures of the work that I posted I personally found very interesting. Some of them probably didn't make it into the show because of their physical size. Others maybe didn't make the cut because of the works fit and finish. Something more VCU students should consider when entering their work in any show.

  1. Again give me more. I don't know HOW you feel about any of these works except that you are showing me them. Do they suck? Are the totally awesome? Should the artist stop using the color red? I am not asking for much. Just give me a little more.

  2. My favorite work are the mysterious machines that incorporate drills, gears and other moving parts. They are pictures five and six. They make me wonder what their purpose is. The parts contained within almost look as if they would contradict each other but it is unknown to be for sure. Both incorporate water and at least one looks to harness the power of the sun. I think if the artist incorporated the purchased technology such electrical heaters for the metal fish body it might be more of a finished piece. My guess is that the work is some kind of statement on the environment and how man affects it.

  3. Machines that seem to be for a specific purpose but don't seem to function are always interesting. They don't always come off successful in that they must foster a sort of mystery of purpose or foil in their function and also function well AS sculptural. Looking more finished is usually the key!
