What is Alix Pearlstein all about? She uses her art to explore various relationships in society. These relationships include, audience to actors, camera to theater, family, actors, media, fame and fortune, etc.
I enjoyed one of her first video works titled "Two Women" which depicted a shirtless man fondling a magazine cutout of a nude female model. The man is being instructed how to interact with the cutout by the voice of a female with a director like tone. This being one of Alix's firsts work she is exploring the relationship between the corporate world's depiction of a woman and the sexual attraction of a male. She uses a dizzying camera effect of constantly zooming in and out to help push the idea of how dizzying media and advertising can be. This effect emphasizes how inescapable advertising has become.
Alix has since moved on to using new camera techniques to continue to explore different relationships in society. Her work has not changed much in the past seven years but she is fine tuning and polishing her way of capturing and sharing her interest in parallels of society.
I can see that she has a growing interest in what most people call everyday interactions between ourselves. Looking through Alix's window she shows us what we consider normal is quite bizarre. Thanks Alix for making us all seem weird.

David,
ReplyDeleteNice perspective. I am not quite sure what you mean "everyday interactions between ourselves. Can you elaborate a little more on this. I am curious to hear more.
Hassan
By everyday interactions I am referring to how people choose to smile and one another in passing or not, holding doors for each other, paying a toll for someone, giving change to the homeless, flicking off another driver, etc.
ReplyDeleteah...the dramaics (?) of the everyday actions? Ok that makes sense.
